First Things First – October 1

September brought fierce winds and a frightening storm, but here we are, still standing and ready for a new month ahead. When we remember September of ’17, we will remember Irma. We are grateful that, for the most part, the storm veered from us and spared us significant damage. Still, some have suffered and the aftermath has given opportunity for heroic acts of service and compassionate sacrifice. If you want to offer help to affected areas or give to those in need, our webpage www.calvary.us/irma will help, and yes, donations given can also be used for relief efforts in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Perhaps we will have a quieter October!

Many events had to be rescheduled and one of those in the public launch of our Seminole campus. This weekend marks the official launch of Calvary’s Seminole Campus. I am grateful for all the work, prayers and preparation that have gone into  this gospel initiative as part of our X150 strategy. We’ll share reports from this weekend soon on our Calvary Seminole Facebook page.

This week, we are pleased to welcome Andrew Walker to Calvary. Walker is a scholar who has authored several books and works with our Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission www.erlc.com. He is the author of the new book God and the Transgender Debate. He tackles some of the hot-button cultural issues head on from a thoughtful and biblical vantage point. He will be lecturing each morning at Calvary Christian High School, but he will also be lecturing Wednesday night, October 4th for our entire church family at 6:30pm. The topic will be In Whose Image? Biblical Sexuality in a Post-Christian Age. Because we believe this is so important, we are asking all groups and ministries on Wednesday night from middle school and up to meet together to hear Walker’s address. Here is an opportunity to hear a first rate scholar address the challenges of our secular age and help us think biblically about a multiplicity of issues related to the sexual revolution our culture is experiencing. We will live stream this address to our East Lake and Seminole campuses as well.

Today marks the beginning of a new message series entitled Life is a Battlefield: How to Prepare, Fight and Win. I hope you’ll join us each Sunday in October for this important series on spiritual warfare.

On Wednesday, October 11 our Discover Calvary Seminar will be held on our Clearwater campus at 6:30pm. If you are new to Calvary and wanting to take the next step, I’d love for you to join us. Learn more and register at Discover Calvary.

Women’s Night of Worship and the Word is on October 23rd at 6:30pm at our Clearwater campus. This is a great night for women of all ages to come together to lift up the name of Jesus through passionate worship and dynamic Bible teaching. The guest speaker is Rachel Lovingood and worship is led by Jenifer Smith.  This is a free event.  Register at calvary.us/WNOWW.

Finally, October will end with our Trunk or Treat event on October 31 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at all three campuses. To volunteer for the event, register at calvary.us/trunk-or-treat.

We can rejoice in God’s protection and goodness through the recent storms, but the work continues. I hope you’ll join us each weekend this month as we continue to grow in Christ together at Calvary.
